Aluminum foil also plays a very important role in cosmetic packaging, especially in products that have strict requirements for shelf life and the stability of active ingredients. Its main application is also due to its excellent barrier properties. 

The main application forms of aluminum foil in cosmetic packaging: 

Composite hose / Composite bottle (Tube & Bottle) 

Structure: This is the most common method. The cosmetic tubes or bottles are not made of pure plastic, but have a multi-layer composite structure. One of the layers is aluminum foil. A typical structure might be: outer layer plastic/PE + adhesive + aluminum foil + adhesive + inner layer plastic/PE or special coating. 

Application: Widely used in the packaging of cream, essence, facial cleanser, hand cream, toothpaste and other， emulsion or gel-type products. 

Function: 

Anti-oxidation: Many skin care products contain active ingredients such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and plant extracts. These ingredients are highly susceptible to oxidation by oxygen in the air, resulting in their degradation or discoloration. The aluminum foil layer effectively blocks oxygen, protecting these ingredients. 

Moisture-proof/Water retention: Prevents the evaporation of moisture in the product, maintaining its stable texture; at the same time, it also prevents external moisture from entering and affecting the product quality. 

Keep away from light: Certain active ingredients (such as retinol, alpha-hydroxy acids, etc.) are sensitive to light. The aluminum foil can block light (especially ultraviolet and visible light), preventing them from degrading. 

Prevent odors: It can prevent the fragrance of the product from evaporating, and also prevent external odors from penetrating. 

2. Composite film/bag packaging 

Structure: Similar to pharmaceuticals, aluminum foil is combined with other materials (such as plastic and paper). 

Application: Suitable for packaging bags of facial masks, wipes, samples/trial packs, etc. 

Function: To maintain the moisture of wet wipes, prevent the evaporation of facial mask liquid, and ensure the stability of single-portion essence samples or powder samples. 

3. Inner lining of the bottle cap / pump head 

Structure: Similar to pharmaceuticals, the inner part of the cap or pump head of the cosmetic bottle may also have a layer of aluminum-plastic composite sealing gasket. 

Function: Provide additional sealing performance to prevent oxidation, contamination or evaporation of the product during storage due to insufficient sealing at the bottle mouth. 

4. Ampoule (a type of glass vial) 

Application: Although ampoule bottles are mostly made of glass, their openings are usually sealed with aluminum caps. Sometimes, the inner part of the caps also contains aluminum foil padding to ensure a complete seal and prevent the contents from coming into contact with air. 

Why is aluminium foil suitable for cosmetic packaging? 

Outstanding barrier properties: It can effectively block oxygen, water vapor, light and odors, which is crucial for protecting sensitive active ingredients. 

Chemical inertness: Under normal circumstances, aluminum foil does not react with the common components found in cosmetics, ensuring high safety. 

Maintain product quality: This helps to ensure that the texture, color, aroma and efficacy of the product remain consistent throughout the validity period. 

Enhance the sense of quality: The texture of composite hoses or bottles is usually superior to that of ordinary plastic pipes, which can enhance the overall image of the product.
